I keep starting post-NFA fics in my head, but I can't get anywhere with them. I want to spend time with Angel and Spike again, but I can't come up with a single scenario that isn't (A) terribly mawkish, or (B) hasn't already been done better by somebody else. I've thought of going back to S5, 6 or 7 of BtVS, but they've all been done better by somebody else.

This morning I dreamed (I'm sure I remember the word dreampt in use back in the old days, but I haven't seen it in years) that I was back in the Army. This is a recurring dream and fairly common, I'm told, among people who've been in the army.

In the dream I'm always stunned to be there, far too old, and frantic to reverse the (bizarre, unprecedented, illogical) induction process and get out. And in every dream, I remember previous dreams and realize that this time, it's actually for real. I wake up with the bedclothes tossed to the far side of the room and a sore jaw from all the anxious grinding of teeth. Ow, my teeth hurt.

Earlier this year I did a short comic with Keith Giffen called Fanbase

Just talked to Julie. Mike (see previous post) has been sent up. He's heading to Iraq in two weeks.

Mike's a 42 year old Major who's been in the Reserves since his early 20s. I've known him since my first days in comics. He let me crash on his sofa for a month when I moved to California to work for Sony, and he taught me how to Photoshop so I could get coloring work when there were no jobs to be had at all. Our politics couldn't be farther apart, but he's a good, loyal friend and somehow we manage to keep on good terms despite the current mess our country's in.

Mike loves the Army and kept doing the soldier thing even while he worked on TV shows (Stormship Troopers, Spiderman) and in comics. Last year when Julie got pregnant and animation/advertising bottomed out, he went full time active duty to support the baby. He got promoted and took a posting to New York, with the agreement that he'd be Regular Army from that point on, and presumably stay stateside, doing the training/admin stuff he alone seems to like and actually does quite well. So, two weeks after the move he's informed that he's still Reserve and his new unit is going to Iraq. Ay caramba.

I have a jiggly feeling in my stomach. I've been following Ginmar's blog, and it's hard to picture Mike, 42 year old artist guy, in the heat and chaos of Iraq. He's dedicated and fit, but Jesus. Iraq. Mike.

And he's supposed to be there for a year. My God.

I feel so very sluggish about coloring eight million tiny little people in a parking lot today.

*nods*

ETA: Hah! I was counting backwards! No wonder it's taking so long!

Hi, Mike

I talked to Julie today. Wow. I got a jiggly feeling in my stomach for a minute, but I know you'll be fine. You have all the training and guts you need.

It sucks that you're slated for a whole year, though. I pray this war ends well before that and you'll be home to Julie and Fiona long before that.

I'm glad to hear that you're taking your laptop and will have email. I'm working at home again so I can write frequently, so feel free. You know, you might want to start a blog about your experiences.

http://www.livejournal.com/

is free and extremely reliable; I'm currently following the blog of a female soldier in country in Iraq and it's powerful reading. Also, many people drop in and offer bits of home/opinions. You might find it worthwhile to do so yourself.

Best of luck. Call me or email me as often as the fit takes you, okay? Julie also. I love you lots, you know.
