She's mah hero, not least because she can write a story that absolutely sells me on the idea (which I have firmy resisted lo, these several years) that Spike's soul was a total wash and he'd be better of without it. Nay, that he could lose it and not even know!
And then she can write a story where Souled Spike goes back in time and does Good to beat the band, wearing the gem of Amara on his toe, and he's every bit as sympathetic and believable. Oh, for a few more chapters of Toe Ring Spike! Of all her WIPs, that's the one I want more of.
It's a kink. I boost for the poor unpopular soul. I like souls, and Spike's is such a forlorn little thing. Nobody gives it the time of day. It's like a ill-clad latecomer to a party, steeping in humiliation like a teabag, cringing in a corner ignored by all. The soul makes me feel tender and solicitous.
Yes, Spike was redeemed without it, but I love the heroic desperation that drove him to get it back. I like the soully kinship with Angel -- I like that Spike was at such an extremity he ended up taking a page from Angel's book. Heh. I was reading some 80-proof Spike hate over at the Babble Board back in the day, and somebody jeered at Spike for imitating Angel, soulwise. And? That's lovable. It's endearing! What's not to like whenever Spike imitates Angel?
And I earnestly wank that the soul had lasting benefits -- searing at first, but also an instrument of wisdom and spiritual attainment. Spike wasn't sorry, at least (all that AtS S5 griping was a tough guy pose), and he'd fight to keep it, if anybody *DrukoffDru* tried to shake it loose. He so would.
Oh, God, I just bought the latest copy of Angel magazine. The blurb for Damage says that if they'd gotten another season, poor batshit Dana would have returned. Auuuugh. Why do I torture myself? Well, because the magazines are all I have left. I can't not buy them. I never bought them when I had the series, I'm a whole new market -- which is yet another reason why Dark Horse cancelling their Buffy comics is irrational and clueless. They're leaving money by the wayside, but that's Dark Horse for ya.
Alas! What would I not have given to see Dana return? Oh, thou Fox and WB: thou cruel, savage, ungrateful and inhuman creatures. You have so much karma to work off.
