If anyone wants evidence about the noosphere/power of fandom, for good or ill, here's mine: I'm currently into Torchwood, but the tribal ugliness (the shipper ugliness) is just sucking away any pleasure I had in the show. And it's not just the shippers: it's the anti-shippers too. And the militant spoilerphobes, and the racebaiters. It's all got so fucking grim.
Ten people on my flist have bailed from the fandom. They didn't flounce or anything, and they don't even know each other. They just found the shippy bullshit too much. Why must everything devolve to shippy bullshit? I know it's ridiculous but this actually makes me weary about women as a whole. We've got this empowering thing, this fanfic phenom that crosses the globe at the speed of thought, and all the majority can do is fight about what man gets who. And I mean fight. It makes me feel... kinda shamed. Who needs it?
It makes me feel like a possum, a possum in winter. A possum waiting for fandom spring. Bah.
