Okay, in July Nebraska passed a Safe Haven law: amnesty for anyone who drops an unwanted kid at a hospital doorstep. I voted for it myself.
Rational, don't you think, in a Red state that opposes abortion? The only trouble is that in the last three weeks they've been getting kids who are 11, 13, and 15 years old, and NOW people are starting to squawk.
Hi, fuck you, pro lifers. I was an unwanted kid and I was tortured for fifteen years before my mother found an out, and then she abandoned me at a hospital, just like these kids.
Not all kids are wanted. But all kids are helpless, when they live with a resentful abusive parent. That parent has the power to break their bones, deny them food, scald them, suffocate them, and neglect them when they're sick. There is no hell like the life of an unwanted, resented child.
But get this: The Pro Lifers are trying to rescind the law now, because it involves real kids with real parents who actually want to abandon them. They're on the radio calling for a repeal, because this law was only meant for fluffy babies.
Here's a Republican Fox right wing take on it (um, may they all burn in hell):

As someone who will live forever with the broken, unhealed bones inflicted by a mother who hated me? I want sanctuary for all these kids. I've tried to find a way to write the state legislature about this, but so far it seems to just be another Republican wolvish hatefest on the weakest of all. If anyone reading this can fine a good url, I'd be obliged.
I'm kinda tired.
