Father Leaves 9 Children Under Safe Haven Law

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Creighton University Medical Center Nursing Supervisor told KETV NewsWatch 7 a man left all nine of his children at the hospital Wednesday night.

The children are between 1 and 17-years-old.

The father will not be charged because of the safe haven law which states any child under the age of 19 can be left at a hospital if they're in immediate danger.
This is the fourth case of children ages 11, 13, and 15 being dropped off at a hospital since it became a law in July.

In the wake of children being abandoned by their parents, Nebraska officials will try to clarify the new 'safe haven' law on Thursday.
Health and Human Services officials, adoption experts, and charity groups will hold a joint news conference to outline alternatives for families who are struggling with parenting issues.

Nebraska lawmakers said they may need to clarify the law, which was intended to protect newborn children, if a parent is overwhelmed.

OMG -- are there actually huge numbers of unwanted children out there? Do their own parents -- the people who irresponsibly brought them into the world -- hate them, resent them and wish they had never been born? I'm shocked.

The thing is, Omaha has a great resource for unwanted kids -- it's called the Child Saving Institute, and it is highly funded by private donors. It requires no effort beyond a phone call for these hospitals to get the Child Saving Institute involved when children of any age are abandoned.

But anti-abortionists who proposed the law in the first place are now trying to repeal the law. Because older children -- unwanted, neglected, abused children -- are being left at hospitals. That's something anti-abortionists don't want to look at. Pro-lifers don't
want to think about their responsibilty when a child is born and remains unwanted. It's too messy; it involves money. It's easier to let children suffer at the hands of a parent who hates them.

My mother abandoned me in just the same way, except she had my father's insurance to make it all nice and easy. The hospital was totally complicit because, hey, money. And make no mistake -- if she hadn't had that option she would have killed me. She had a new boyfriend to pay her bills and he told her he wasn't going to feed another man's child. It was a choice between her meal ticket and my life, and she pushed me out the window without hesitation.

Looking back, I only wish she had done it sooner. It would have spared me 15 years of savage physical abuse, starvation and neglect.

This move to rewrite the safe haven law is PRO CHILD ABUSE, period. It's unconscionable. But that's the pro-lifers down to the ground.
