Oh, wow. The HUGE theatrical costume company in my town is going out of business, which is sad. But they are pretty much giving away the store, which is intoxicating.

This morning I made my fourth trip. I can't stay away. I have three crinolines, three 18th century gowns, a perfectly authentic Carmelite nun's habit, God knows how many hats, petticoats, leotards, tights, and wigs -- most of them for $5 a pop, or less. And today I bought a stunning black 30s style dress (with satin wrap) from a production of Mame. It goes perfectly with the shoes, made in Spain and utterly unworn, that I got for a dollar.

My feeble old camera is fritzing, or I'd be spamming like mad.

They're also selling huge bolts of fabric, and I got stuff to make curtains for the new house.

I don't do costumes but once a year, on Halloween. But these are the guys I rent from, and when they're gone... gah! And a lot of this stuff is beautifully made. They're works of art! I must give them a loving home!

Okay, it's possible that this is odd behavior. But it's fun, dang it. And you should see that Mame dress. OMGso lovely.

Hee. I don't usually even dress up for Halloween and I'd be doing the same thing if I were there. :-)

It's like heaven's garage sale. BLISS.

[identity profile] missmurchison.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I would probably buy stuff like crazy and then never have the courage to wear any of it.

It's sad they're going out of business, but I want a pic of you in a crinoline!

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to a party as an Incoruptible, so I'll get at least one wearing out the habit. And I'm gonna to find a place to wear that black Mame suit or die trying. *resolve face*

Spent about an hour the other night attempting pics, but the camera's timer is screwy. I wonder if I'm trivial enough to buy a disposable camera just to record my swag?

Things are selling for $5.00?!? How lucky you are! The Wesleyean Theater Dept. here is selling off a lot of their clothing, etc. tomorrow from noon until 4:00...but they are charging $10.00 for accessories and $30.00 for clothing!

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The prices are blowing my mind. They're even selling inline skates and helmets (from a production of Starlight Express, I think). And eek -- the sewing supplies, the braid, the silk flowers, the lace! Bins of it, for practically nothing.

I 'm not a shopper per se, but I can't stay away from this.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I meant to say: bodices, the velvet and satin kind that Dickensian carolers wear, and beaded ones, and brocade ones. A dollar each.

I wish I could take out a loan, buy the inventory and open my own shop.

I'd go and buy half the shop, if I weren't halfway across the globe right now. I'm a real sucker for bargains. And when do you get an opportunity like that.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Got any requests? I could send you a parcel. They've got pretty much everything you can imagine, in all colors. :D So far, I haven't asked about an item the owner didn't pop back with five minutes later.

Not as fun as finding it yourself, but if you want me to grab something/ mail it, let me know.

Oh, oh, so hard to decide, they don't happen to have a website? Ah, something that's easy to mail... do they have vests? Like, with patterns stitched in? And, and... I'll give it some more thought.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Vests. Got it. I'll look for vests with abstract stitching!

Do they sell these ? I don't know what they're called in English. (In German it's 'Borte') I could use some of those. I don't know yet what for, but I know I can use them. I adore them. I like abstract patterns, nothing floral.

[identity profile] starborn-scribe.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Google translates it as "edging." What are they used for?

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah -- it's good you said that, because I thinking of sari material. Astrid, if it's a kind of trim, I'll see what they have.

Like Cyn said, it's an embroidered band. They're stitched onto cloth as decoration.

[identity profile] starborn-scribe.livejournal.com 2005-10-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. I'm glad that Cyn could score some for you.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wait, I think I know what these are -- a kind of embroidered band. They use them on the yokes and cuffs of tunics and things, right? I didn't see any on previous trips, but I'll dig around.

a kind of embroidered band.

Exactly. Thanks for looking, these thinks are really expensive in the shops.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Got some! Embroidered bands, I mean. Also found a vest you might like -- it's teal and moss colored applique, stitched.

You aren't by any chance interested in a puffy shirt, are you? I bought it because the seamstress was being really helpful, and she went on and on about how the tiny pleats were a lost art. It looks kind of slavic. Up to you. :)

Oh, wonderful. Thank you so much.

As to the shirt, I like ethno-look so I'm indeed interested in the puffy shirt. (Unless it's snow-white. Can't wear white, washes out my skin.)

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's white, but has a lot of colorful stitchwork. I'll send it along just in case. I'll mail the box tomorrow.

Oh wow. This is so great. I have a thing for beautiful fabric with embroidered patterns. Also, blankets. I'm collecting blankets. ;) Dude, how much did you spend? I got my paypal account working again (provided this time I can remember my password). Also, is there any, like, German specialty you have set your eyes on, which I could get you?

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh, heavens, nothing worth speaking of. Don't worry about it! I'm just glad a few more bits from that awesome sale are getting a home.

Also, is there any, like, German specialty you have set your eyes on, which I could get you?

The only things I can think of at the moment are edible and difficult to mail, like creamy pastries or interesting mustards. :D But you'll be sure to send me an autographed copy of Muppet!Angel when it's out, I hope?

I envy you so much right now I can't even tell you.
When the giant Colorado costume Company went out of business my brother managed to score a few things, but sadly I was without funds. I worked for them for three years and knew where all the good stuff was too. They had costumes from obscure historical pictures produced by MGM from the 30's, 40's and 50's, and full sets of costumes for every character in every popular musical done by highschools and poor small colleges all around the country. (Two full sets of costumes for The King and I, frex, including all the children!) There is nothing like these places any more. It's so sad. At last though, you got your 18th century gown with paniers:-)

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Now if I can just find pantaloons for the 19th century outfit. I'm almost tempted to join a caroling group to have a place to wear it, but happily I'm a lousy singer.

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Would you be interested in a box of (various) gold braids and ribbons? Remnants, mostly, but a few lengthy pieces. Also a few appliques. I know you work in a fabric store and must have tons of this stuff, but if you want it, please send me your mailing address at YCYMartin@aol.com.

I'm no hand with a needle -- the only way I'll ever utilize this stuff is by wielding a glue gun, and that's... kind of sad. These braids deserve better. :)

That's so cool. My credit cards are glad that I'm not there. *lol*

I hear you. Fortunately it's all SO cheap!
