Finally got down to the nitty and talked money with the graphic novel people, which I hate doing (cause I'm an arteest and it's trauma and oh oh oh), and it sounds okay. An advance up front, based on the pre-order committment by Major Book Chain, and royalities based on sales over a certain target. That I can live with.
Now I have to do two more pages based on a rewrite requested of the writer by Major B. C. MBC wanted the Shakespeareness dialed back up a few notches, so he obliged. I supposed I'll do this in watercolor? Oils seem problematic, timewise. Ach, I need supplies, and have no vehicle. Vehichle went into the clutches of the hip retro Honest Car Place yesterday and I haven't seen a one of it since.
The real jaw-dropper is that they want lettering and balloon placement on these things. !!!! The hell? I don't do that,I said. Don't you have a guy?
Pub: We have a graphics department, but they're not so good with balloons.
They've got to be a shitload better than me! I wanted to say, but it wasn't that kind of conversation.
So now I have to go hat in hand to my pal who letters, and work a trade. Crap and damn! He wants spec art too, for a pitch to Dark Horse, and I'm back to drowning in committments.
Damn, these people make me nervous. It's all on me to impress Major Book Chain into forking over a chunk of money up front, and they don't even have a letterer! But my friends are on me to push this to fruition, because they're Sheakespeareophiles and think Major Book Chain will make my career.
Must cough pneumonial lungs up, then call the Car Folk, and then (sigh) call Letterer Pal. I'd rather go back to bed. But there will be plenty of naps in heaven.
When I was in the monastery they had improving slogans on the walls:Work today, rest in eternity.
Can't we do both?

Just talked to Letterer Pal and he's hot to get in on this. Perked right up when I named the publisher. Says he'll do the two pages just to get his foot in the door, says he'll make MBChain love him. Which makes my life much better. It's all who you know, isn't it?
I think I can get him as part of the deal when it comes down to signing a paper.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good. Hope you and your car are feeling better soon.
And, BTW, I really like your icon.

I can't seem to swing GIPs or anything decent on Photoshop, so I lost my temper one night and just drew over a screencap of Spike with a neon crayon. He's pre-soul, see, with his native love-capacity making him glow in the stygian blackness. It's all symbolic and jazz.
Don't mind me, I'm delerious and inclined to rave. Hack, hack.

Ooo, hadn't thought of it like that. Pre-soul Spike aura. I like it. I just thought it was pretty. I'm shallow that way. :-)
