Yeesh, it's been a while since I posted to LJ. To the kind soul who nominated me at the Raison d'Etre Awards: thanks! I finally got a moment to look at the competition, and I can honestly say that losing is no shame in such a distinguished field. Hoot, that's some good fic over there.

I chickened out on buying the house. I love it, love it like a bride, but it's a big hulking gigantic barn, and I could only survive the first year by renting out the upper two floors -- and there's no very good chance of even doing that. The upper floors have been empty for two years. Plus the roof is shot -- it's a massive, endless TILE roof, and tiles cost as much as platinum. And the wiring's heinous. And the eaves are rotting through. And...

Anyway, I can't hack it. Can't. Can't. Can't is such an ugly word, isn't it? The down payment alone would break me, and then the place would collapse around my ears. I just don't have the guts. I've started looking at charming cottages in the foofy neighborhood across the way.

*sob*

I feel like a betrayer.

1. Congratulations on being nominated. That is an honor.

2. How did you betray yourself by doing what's in your best interest? 'Splainy, please.

1: Thank you. I only looked today, after the fact, but on so doing I said to myself: Phht, you never stood a chance with this bunch. And it was a cheery thing. :D

2: Because I love this house. Poor beautiful old broken Arabian that she is. She's been yolked to the rental cart, and no one see her lines like I do (I've lived here almost four years); her nobility, her pure blood. All she needs is a bag of hideously expensive oats! and she can turf out as a champion, as God intended. Yes, I was imprinted by Black Beauty as a child, in case you're asking. :)

1. You underestimate your writing ability, friend o' mine. You're quite the very good writer, you know. The writers who are your co-nominees are all quite the very good writers, too. You're in the big water, now. And, yes; that is a cheery thing.

2. OH, the house-love. I get that. I'be been there and didn't buy it, too. but, it's not a betrayal, at all. It would've been a betrayal to buy it and not have the time + $$ + passion to finish the Bob-Vilaing. And: a house is a money pit! So, you need to buy a house with a very, very, tiny pit. IOW, a house that doesn't need to be gutted, re-roofed, re-insulated, re-re-re 'd to death. *hugs you and fixes you tea and cookies and fresh slices of fruit, then accompanies you to the realty agent to find another house.

Thanks. I'll need someone with the faintest idea what's happening. *g*

Congratulations on the nominations! Your stories are wonderful treasures.

It sounds like it was very tough to pass on that house. I hope you find another one that you can fall in love with, but that won't absorb all your resources. Good luck to you.

Thanks and thanks. I've been scouting the neighborhoods for house alternatives. There's a sweet little thing -- virtually covered in honeysuckle -- having walk- throughs tomorrow.

'House poor' would be a scary way to live. Fear not, you will find the one that is meant for you.

Congrats on your nominations! More people need to read A Proper Funeral. You will know them by the smirk that they can't get off their faces. :-)

For real! I'd never sleep. Can't imagine the stress.

Hey. Sorry to hear about the house. Probably the right decision (just the thought of going into that kind of debt, shudder) but still...

I'm just so discouraged about the idea of renting. Even if it were something I knew anything about, there aren't many renters. My neighborhood is just bristling with For Rent signs, sigh.

Yeah, finding good tenants to sublet to is a whole new can of worms. That was part of what kept me from even inquiring about the price of this place. Right now the people on the first floor are very nice and clean, but I've heard enough stories from landlords... everone who has space to rent has at least one story about a tenant who wouldn't pay at all, and German law is ridiculously protective of them. It's almost impossible to throw them out, even if they've been living in your apartment for months without paying a single cent.

And in all of the cases I was told about, once they were finally kicked out they left an apartment that had to be fully renovated and refurbished. One guy next door actually left a room full of beer bottles with pee in them. And for his flatmates a 1500 Mark phone bill from calling rather questionable hotlines.

But for a little while I dreamed about owning this place...

Hey Cyn, do you have a website for your Buffy fanfic? (I'm updating our archive.)

**blush**

I have no website. Sorry. I never got around to it, it's just a hobby. But I think The Bloody Awful Gutter has every thing I've ever written.

(some of them are horrible. I asked some of them to be deleted. And one of them is up at TaTF.) Eee.

I hear you, I never seem to find the time or inclination to even work on my pro site.

Incidentally I stumbled upon some of your earlier stories a few weeks ago. The style was so completely different that I had to compare the feedback addresses: I thought at first it was a namesake. Okay, they can't compare to your later fics, but I rather liked that one story... some post-chosen fic, totally Jossed. (Though I thought that one stopped just when it got interesting.)

I left the 'website' field open, unless you want me to link to the Gutter instead. I can always edit stuff in later.
