Vatican bans gay priests.

*bursts into tears*

2000 years of orientation for priests, and brothers. "Brother, do not despise your effeminate brother: welcome him. Never mock him, on pain of sin." = Desert Fathers.

Next they will come after you. Oh God, this is like watching a brother join the Nazi party.

(the problem is NOT sexual oriention. The problem is careerism, selfishness. Money. Big Oil. This is the end. Augh.)

I know. I was heartsick when I heard this today. LJ introduced me to someone who likely to be "rooted out" for his orientation, even though he has chosen to be celebate. (Which is a whole other issue for another day.)

The report I heard on NPR said that the motivation for this is the belief in the correlation between homosexual priests and the "current sexual scandals." It is painful to me that those in positions of influence and power can't get the simple fact that being attracted to adults of the same gender (i.e. homosexual attraction) is completely different than being attracted to children, be they the same gender or not. Seek out the pediphiles. If they insist, seek out those priests, regardless of orientation, who are not being true to the promise to be celebate, but all those who identify as gay, regardless of the level of activity? Argh! ::smacks head on wall::

What I meant to say was: It's not simply about Not Getting It. Believe me, these guys aren't stupid. They get it just fine. They know exactly what they're doing.

They think they can ride the Ultra Conservative, anti-gay wave and offer up a scapegoat to the press, neatly silencing lay outrage and consolidating Right Wing political alliances in one move. That this announcment completely undermines two thousand years of theology and monastic teaching is obviously not a consideration -- they think the laity is too fucking stupid to understand what they're about.

You know, maybe they don't get it. I think they've seriously underestimated the intelligence of the average massgoer.

I have no words.

Will go and speak to my priest here. Have put it off too long already -- now, the German Catholic church openly ignore orders, such as the lay(wo)men in church letter, and they may do so with the ones among them...but I'm not holding my breath.

God damn it. For real.

It's breaking my heart (even though I've left, it's killing me). I can't believe it's come to this.

They're throwing a bone to the press, striking a pose in the wake of the pedophilia scandal. So: More scapegoating. More cynical, vile, diabolical scapegoating.

Evil. It's utterly contrary to what the Church has taught for two thousand years. It's evil.

I've been following that for a few days, and it fills me with rage. The bigotry and the sheer theological wrongness of saying that a group of people are so "inherently disordered" that even God, apparently, can't help them is just staggering. I just don't even know what the answer is anymore, if this can possibly be fixed.

I've been in religious life, and I know how they operate. I've seen their motives from the inside, and I thought nothing could stun me at this point. But this is so utterly beyond wicked I can hardly think straight. It violates the bedrock theology of Catholicism, the gospel, the Evangelical Counsels, and the three vows.

They've sold the very foundations of Catholic spirituality. They've coldly chosen a victim: the chaste, same sex-oriented priest or nun, and to hell with justice. And the message that it sends to the ignorant, the bigoted, the foolish... it's incendiary. It's monstrous.

Words fail. I can't order my thoughts. When Ratzinger was elected my heart died within me, but I never thought they'd stoop to this.

And what will this say to the same-sex oriented Catholic who believes gay sex is wrong? (Along with masturbation and birth control. What's next, banning anyone tempted to masturbate from the priesthood?)

This will do harm.

Incalculable harm. I get cold chills.

Even though I've gone Quaker, I still love the church and don't want to see it perish. And this? Not only will it do the exact opposite of what those wicked men intend -- it will drive more laypeople away in disgust and put the final nail in the coffin of vocations -- but I have a terrible feeling that God Himself will punish it.

I really just don't have the words. My only hope is that with things swinging so far to the right, they will have to eventually swing back again. There has to be a backlash to this bigotry. Doesn't there?

sigh.

There has to be a backlash to this bigotry.

I agree -- I think there will be a backlash. But when the dust clears, what will be left of the Church? How maimed and depopulated will it be?

Where is the St. Francis of this age? How much worse is it going to get before God sends a saint to clean house?

At first I just was indignant over the unfairness, but then I realized that this smart move manage to defy all the principles of Christianity I can remember of.

To deny the entrance to seminaries for gays because of the pedophiles (never mind that the cause-effect connection doesn't exist, never mind that how are they going to check the gayness, never mind that there supposed to exist celibate vows...) is just wrong on all possible levels.

(of course, my branch, the Orthdox church seem to effectively pretend homosexuality doesn't exist at all)

This is beyond ignorance -- they're not ignorant. They know exactly the circumstances that led to pedophilia in the Church. They know how it <i>continued.</i>* There's a clear paper trail (a 2002 article in <Vanity Fair</i>, written by a Catholic lay journalist) that names names.

The position, when I talked to my bishop, was this:

<i>"this all happened in the 70s, when we thought pedophilia could be cured. So we shipped these guys off to the Catholic Religious Nut Farms,* and then they got back into circulation when the shrinks passed them."</i>

Okay. Fair enough. If you cry ignorance once to me, I'll give you the bye.

But this anti-Gay Inquistion is from the very devil. I implore every parish priest, every nun, brother and religious: look at this. Look at the VIOLENCE it does to charity. Look at what it does to the vows. This is monstrous. This is Spain and Torquemada again.

I realised today that they have to be talking "witch hunt". It's the only way. They're going to investigate every seminary for 'signs of faggotry' (or however they put it)? Geez, how are they going to do that? Tell us, Brother X, eager young man hoping to rise in the Church, have you noticed any of your brothers in the seminary acting a little - you know? Maybe looking at other men a little too long? A little too much care with the personal appearance? Just an - odd feeling about one or two perhaps? Of COURSE we aren't asking you to betray anyone, we just want to HELP them ...

... really, you don't say? Not Brother Y, who outscored you on the last 3 quizzes and who you suspect is in line to be assigned to a plum parish when he's ordained? Well, let's just have an informal chat with Brother Y ...

... who better hope that he has more friends in high places than Brother X does.

It really is appalling.

I think God is more likely to send a saint than a lightning bolt, though. But what I really think will happen is that Pope Rat will die peacefully in his sleep before too much longer, of old age, not even ahead of schedule, and that it's the NEXT pope that's really going to matter. And any stupid things the Rat does in his time in power are going to melt like cobwebs in the rain within months of his departure.

I realised today that they have to be talking "witch hunt".

When I talked about informers, right before I quit, I thought I was being histrionic. I hoped it was just a bad precognitive dream.

This is a torch. This is the Inquisition and informers. Again. I am torn between grief and utter disgust -- this is pure slumgullion filth.

Please pray for the RC Church and its mystics.
